I dislocated my knee cap last summer right before school. It SUCKED! It looked so nasty; just picture the old dude in Mr. Deeds moving his knee cap around. Ewwwww..

The knee cap is an important protection to the rest of the knee that lays beneath it.
The procedure the Dr is recommending may not relieve the pain though I certainly would think it would but ultimately it is really needing to stay in place to save the rest of the knee.(Just as armour protected the Vikings during battle so does the knee cap protect the knee,cartlige and the head of the knee,that is why it is somewhat moveable in it's normal state.)
Have your mom ask the Dr for the pro's and con's of having it fixed verses not and make an INFORMED decision.

Yeah, I have dislocated my hip, and shoulder too. It doesn't really hurt as much as it would seem to. I have to have knee surgery too. That is gonna suck so much worse than injuring it in the first place.yes. or it was something in my knee. i did it twice, and on the second time, i heard/felt this sick "pop" from my knee. i went down pretty quick both times.
