I had this done a few years back. Stock up on baby food and gatoraide. The first few days you will not even think about eating, I PROMISE you. I would either buy extremely lose fitting pants/shorts or a long night gown to wear. Drink a lot of fluid. I didn't drink enough to start and ended up severely dehydrated with my organs shutting down. You have to tell yourself to drink, drink, drink. Get lots of rest and don't try to stand straight up at first. A walker may help you get around the first few days. You can rent them at most stores such as Drugco or other pharmacies. You may have drainage tubes, they are very irritating. Be careful with them and drain it how the doctor tells you. Don't be alarmed if you have a little bit of drainage one day and tons the next. I used baby soap for baths/showers. it was mild and non irritating. I suggest sleeping in a recliner the first 2 weeks, you will NOT be able to lie flat on your back. At the very least, stock up on pillows and stack them all around you on the bed to make a reclining position. You may even want to put one under your knees. Don't try to do to much at first, take time to heal. You will need lots of help for awhile and then some later on. You will need to get up and move some but take baby steps. When you begin to eat foods, stay away from a lot of sugary things at first, you can enjoy them in smaller amounts later on. Chew, chew, chew. Don't swallow anything that you haven't chewed enough of. You can get raelly sick and throw it all up. I suggest baby shrimp. They are tiny and packed with protein. Umm. There is so much, feel free to message me later on and I can tell you more. I lost 170lbs and just had the extra skin removed almost 3 weeks ago. Yesterday was my first day back to work. Don't get aggrivated if you don't lose tons at first or lose a lot then none. Be happy with yourself. You are about to make a huge mental and physical change. The mental stuff kicks in a few months after surgery. Make sure you have someone you can talk too. Let me know if you need anything else, this is just a touch of info!

Is it ok to take diet pills or any wieght-loss medicine when your under 16?

Wow, she about covered it all. I had this surgery almost three years ago and I have lost and maintained 110 lbs lost. I am now at 118. I also just had my skin removed.

As for your recovery, everything she said is correct. In addition just make sure that you eat as much protein as you can. Keep in mind you will only be able to eat about two tablespoons at each meal 3 times a day. That's only six tablespoons of food in one day for about the first six weeks. You have to have protein, good proteins. Eggs are great if you can eat them. A lot of bypass patients have a problem with eggs. I would scramble them soft at first and then graduated to hard boiled. But definately chew, chew, chew and then chew some more. Another source of good protein is low-fat cottage cheese and tuna. Yogurt is also really good at first because it's smooth, no need to chew and what? Yes, full of protein. Drinking is also important. Water and Gatorade are good, but don't forget about milk. It counts as a liquid but again, has what? Protein. Make sure you take some chewable vitamins every day as recommended by your doctor. Eat very, very slowly for the rest of your life. You'll probably never be able to eat more than about 2 cups of food in one meal again, so enjoy your food. If I eat too fast, I still get sick and throw up. And don't be discouraged if you can eat one thing today and can't tomorrow. It could change for you on a daily basis. Oh, and stay away from breads at first. If you are going to eat something like that, make sure it's crunchy like toast or a cracker.

Take your time healing. But once you've healed, exercise. It's the fastest way to loose weight. I know you may think that if you could have exercised before you wouldn't be overweight. Maybe true, maybe not. But I will promise you, once the weight starts coming off, you will be able to exercise without feeling a lot of pain like you do right now.

My last piece of advice for now (even though I could type for hours on good and bad experiences I have been through) is try to find a support group to attend. Make friends with other gastric bypass patients. Only they will know what you are truly going through. There is so much more than just the physical part of what you are about to go through. The emotional side will take ahold of you too. Most of it is good. It's the best decision I ever made. But there are tough times too.

Best of luck to you. Feel free to email me at thp_corp@yahoo.com if you need an on-line chat bypass friend for support.
