Would you rather..?

I've got black areas in a lot of my back teeth which I've been reliably informed are most likely to be small cavities. I do intend to go to the dentist when I can find one registering NHS patients.

Anyway, I mentioned this to a friend, and she reckoned it's better to have a lot of small cavities than a couple of huge ones like she has. I disagree - I'd rather have big painful cavities in 2 teeth than small painless cavities in 10!

What's your opinion, which would you rather have? Obviously, you'd rather have no cavities, but which do you think would be better given the two options above, and why?

Do you still go to school/work if you're a little bit sick?

I'd rather have lots of small cavities that 1 or two large cavities. Because lots of small ones will be easier to fill, I'm more inclined to shoose whit restorations over amalgams and if a small filling fails you can always make a bigger hole and fill it. If a large filling fails its Root Canal and crown. Smaller is better.

Big ones in 2 teeth; so I can take them out and so not all my teeth are filled with little holes. Would you rather have one big hole in the wall of your room or small ones? One big one is easier to focus on to repair.

First, I rather have NO cavities. Small cavities are much better to deal with beacause their small to begin with.
and for the big ones, well.more of the big stuff can go
into it and make things alot worse.

Don't you know you can't see the entire cavity? They may
be a lot bigger than you think. If they aren't they certainly will become larger. I would rather go to the
dentist get my teeth fixed and know that I was ok for a
year or so.

Your friend is right.A big cavity which is painful as well, is very likely to have affected the pulp, or what is commonly known as the nerve of the tooth. That means that the tooth will need extensive treatment( root canal treatment) or extraction if the decay is really advanced. Your black areas might be what we dentist call arrested caries.That means that decay has stopped progressing in these cavities and is very unlikely to start again. Treatment for this kind of thing,if required, is relatively more straightforward and most of the times it will be a small filling. So don't worry but get to a dentist as soon as possible.

I agree with you, and I'm in a similar position as well, I have a large number of cavities in my teeth which I need to get fillings in, some are large, others are small, but most of my teeth are going to end up with a filling of some sort in them. I'd much rather just have a few big cavities, and have a couple of teeth full of silver than have a mouthful of silver teeth!

You have a little time if the cavity is small, not much, but if large , the tooth will probably brak off at the gum line and have to be surgically removed.
