do i need stitches?

I was cutting a piece of roast beef for a sandwich when the knife slipped and sliced my thumb. It's about a pretty big gash all the way down and bled like crazy. It stopped and looks like it's ok but it looked pretty deep to me. But since I've never had stitches before I don't know how to tell.

how can we cope with stress?

Answers:
Firstly clean the wound as well as you can,that way you'll be able to see just how deep it is.My guess is that if the bleeding has stopped it's probably not that bad.Apply some anti-septic,then,using a plaster,wrap it round the wound,pulling it quite tightly so as to bind the cut.Leave it on for a few hours then check to see if it seems to be healing ok,if it isn't and it still looks open go to A&E.

Check if your thumb is moving well. If it moves well, and the bleeding has stopped, then you probably don't need stitches.
But be careful, meat can have bacteria and can get your wound infected. So pour some antiseptics on to your wound and wrap it up. Unwrap it only once a day, and pour antiseptics onto it for at least 2-3 days.

If your thumb is not moving as it should, or if your wound gets red and swollen and increasingly painful, then please go to the doctor.

Familydoctor.org advises that you should call a doctor or go to the ER if:

* The wound is jagged.
* The wound is on your face.
* The edges of the cut gape open.
* The cut has dirt in it that won't come out.
* The cut becomes tender or inflamed.
* The cut drains a thick, creamy, grayish fluid.
* You start to run a temperature over 100°F.
* The area around the wound feels numb.
* You can't move comfortably.
* Red streaks form near the wound.
* It's a puncture wound or a deep cut and you haven't had a tetanus shot in the past 5 years.
* The cut bleeds in spurts, blood soaks through the bandage or the bleeding doesn't stop after 10 minutes of firm, direct pressure.

If the cut has stopped bleeding completely and none of the above apply, you can put off the trip to the ER. If any of the conditions described above develop, seek medical attention.

For your own health and safety, you should go to the hospital and ask a doctor or any other medic if stitches are needed.
