Answers:
That happens to me, too. It's just a release of energy. The only time I feel like I'm "falling off a cliff" is when I am 99% asleep. The jolt shocks me awake. :)

If you are awake when it happens im not sure what it could be. But i know when i am sleeping sometimes i actually have a dream or something where i fall off a cliff (wierd isnt it? lol) but i wake up trying to grap onto something. I feel pretty stupid when i wake up lol. I just wake up and start swinging into the air to grab something. But anyway, If thats what it is i happens to other people also dont worry. If you are awake when it happens you may be stressed out about something or scared of something. Try to relax before you go to bed that might help. Well I hope something i said will help you out.

This happens especially if you had been active before going to bed. If you had been active and then immediately try to go to sleep, your synapses are still firing even though you don't want them to anymore, causing the jolts. It sucks. Try taking a warm bath with a calming scented body wash to relax you before bed.

I read about it in my phisiological psychology class years ago.

you are just dreaming

This is caused by your body relaxing and heading off in to a deep slumber. I know of several people this happens to. It is a normal reaction. However, it can also be do to some form of insecurity you may have.

"Research shows that the reason we have falling dreams is because, as we fall asleep, our sense of balance switches from being oriented to the real world to being oriented to the dream world. Even though we are laying down in our beds, in our dreams we are "up and about"- running, flying, leaping, walking, and talking. We have a different sense of balance in dreams. When we dream we are falling, especially just as we are falling asleep, we likely are tumbling into our new sense of balance."
