I asked a hairstylist this while my friend was pregnant. She told me that the reason pregnant women are discouraged from coloring their hair has nothing to do with the baby, and the chemicals do not have an effect on your body. It's because the hormones during pregnancy change the texture of your hair, and so dyes just don't tend to take as well. So you'll spend a lot of money at the salon for a procedure that just won't be very successful. It does not affect the safety of your baby. Also, the dyes used today tend to be milder than the ones they probably used when your mother was pregnant!

.. the chemicals is hair dye dont do anything except to your hair. It isnt like the stuff seaps into your brain and finds its way to your uterus to attack. trust me it should be fine, unless you plan on sniffing the dye, that might have an affect, but other than that it is safe.

it has no affect on the baby, but the color does not last very long in your hair for some reason. you might want to wait until after you have the baby to color- just to get your money's worth
