how normal is it for a dr to do a rectal exam during a pap and pelvic exam?

Question:
i was kinda shocked when my doc stuck her finger in my anus during the pap and pelvic exam yesterday.. i looked it up yesterday and only found 1 out of 13 sites that even mentioned it.. ive had my yearly exams every year for the last 5 years with multiple docs and never had a doc do it to me. also i have had 1 child so anyone with kids knows how many vaginal exams ive had with that .. my hubby is military so i usually have a dif doc everytime i go but this was a first for me and i am wondering how common it is for a 21 year old to recieve this examination of the rectum ..also my mom and sister had never heard of it and they both have had multiple gyno's and are much older than i am .. so im thinkin its not very common and i didnt appreciate the sudden exam

Answers:
Dear ..
it was better if ur doctor told u before he/she wanna have the TR ,for make u prepare for that..why he/she did it.i am almost sure when he/she had ur vaginal exam maybe found or doubt on one thing thats why he/she thought has to have a rectal exam too.the only bad hing he/she did is:didnt ask u before..
dear if u dont like this doc u can change it as u did before but if not u can go and directly ask ab that ..
we have some adhesion or even some methastatics that they give us a little mass and the gyn/obs find them in vaginal exam and for being sure ab it they need to have the recyal exam..
dont let ur trust to docs gone

i smell a malpractice suit talk to an attorney

Its horses for courses, Diff Docs have diff way of doin things, Go back to the clinic if your not sure and ask for a written report on the entire visit/exam.If your still not happy get a 2nd opinion and if it was an intrusion of your privacy then you can take civil action against the doc/clinic.

I would report this doctor because if she didn't tell you she was about to do it's against the law. Did she find any by the way. But I would ask the doctor why she did it. She might have a reason.

It is not comfortable. Although it is routine now and many older doctors are slower to introduce more recent 'routine' practices. Some wait until a person is 50 yrs. old.

maybe she felt a mass whilst doing her vaginal exam you can feel diffrent aspects of the uterus this way

You should ask the doc why she did it. She may have had a good reason, like the nurse before said. I would be sure to go back and ask.

this is called PR (para rectal) exam it is kind of anew technique that not all doctors use it can be done alone or with the para vaginal exam and the doctor can examine and palpate any sort of calcification or tumor they can touch different organs like the kidneys the uterus even the ovaries and examine their structure the Fallopian tubes its a normal practice but i agree that your doctor should have told you about the procedure before doing it.

It is normal to do. As a nurse practitioner I do it all the time when I do the vaginal exam but I tell the patient what I'm going to do first. Rectal masses can be palpated and the stool checked for blood that way. The nurse practitioner that does my exam has always done that too.

I would let the provider know you didn't expect it. If you see them again, ask the provider to tell you before they do it.

I don't think i have ever had a rectal exam during a pelvic and pap exam i don't think that is part of your exam.

I am an alternative medicinal therapist and an ex nurse and i can you that your Doctor is being very thorough, she was doing what is known as 'palpating, you can tell a lot of what is going on in the front of your body by examining the rear end.But i do agree that she should have warned you that she was going to do it. I suggest that you go back and ask her why, do not try a malpractice suit,Doctors have a nasty habit of 'closing rank'No doctor would perform such an exam if they could be liable for a law suit. This is female Doctor NOT a male, so what possible reason would a female doctor have for performing such an examination.Believe me she had her reasons, be thankfull she's a good Doctor.
