why/how does the sun trigger cold sores?

Question:

Answers:
Well, sun exposure does trigger cold sores in some people (like me). "Sure they're called cold sores, but they're often triggered by the sun. Sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage skin and trigger cold sores." See site below for more info. Hope that helps!

How absurd!

It shouldn't. It seems to me that cold sores happen as a result of chapping, which tends to happen more often in the winter when your lips are more likely to get dehydrated from moving from cold weather to dry hot rooms. It IS possible to chap your lips from sun exposure in that you could get dehydrated and bite or suck on your lips, causing more physical stress on the skin.

Stress in general may be a factor too, but I am only talking about my own personal experience with cold sores on my lips than any professional opinion.

Sure they're called cold sores, but they're often triggered by the sun. Sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage skin and trigger cold sores.

Helpful Tips

* Limit your sun time. Avoid 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the sun is strongest.
* Wear sunscreen and lip moisturizer - with UV-A and UV-B protection. SPF 15 or higher is a must.

* Wear a hat to avoid sun on the delicate skin of your face and mouth.
* Beware of reflection of sunlight from water and snow.

Sunlight leaches calcium out of the tissues during vitamin D synthesis (you body makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlight.usually a good thing). Calcium is a vital component for one of your immune's systems methods of interfering with herpes reproduction. If you have herpes, it is quite common to develop cold sores after exposure to too much sunlight, for this reason. Take a good calcium supplement if this is happening to you.
