Should my pre-schooler have a tonsillectomy if she has been considered a "borderline" case?

Question:
My child is nearly 6 and has been said to be a borderline case for a tonsillectomy. Surgery to me is a last resort usually but I dont want to make a wrong decision. I'm stuck in the middle on what to do even after thorough research.

Answers:
See another surgeon and get a second opinion before going ahead with surgery. Tonsils are not completely unnecessary and should not be removed if it is not for a good reason such as sleep apnea or chronic tonsilititis.

Other Answers:
Well. why wouldn't ya? Not like she'll be missing them later in life, and they can only cause harm in there.

You have to seek advice with your GP. I have a nephew who is 5yo will have tonsillectomy scheduled after 6mos accdg to his DR he really need to. But if you wanna have peace of mind talk to your DR.

ask for a second opinion. from a doctor.

Tonsils are an important part of the immune system, and should not be removed unless they are obstructing the airway. Tonsils have pits (or 'crypts') on their surface, which attract microorganisms. This is a good thing though because white blood cells also gather there and serve as a forward defense against them.
Also, tonsils are the largest (relative to the diameter of the throat) in young children, but begin to atrophy after puberty so if you wait the problem may eliminate itself.
