Start with St. John's Wort. It often prevents depression from getting worse, and makes you feel better if your depression is not too severe. If it does not help, you may need a prescription drug.
The term "depression" is used very differently by doctors and by us ordinary folk. Doctors mean something clinical which can be measured on a test. It's biological, but it causes mental depression of the sort you and I mean when we use the word.
So let's say "unhappy" instead to refer to the emotional part which is not really part of the physical part. Like you, I have "career irregularity." To be precise, I am unemployed, and have little hope of being employed in the profession I practiced for the last 16 years; I was a legal secretary. Any other sort of job I take with my current training and experience is likely to pay less, and I have bills enough for that to be a problem.
So, stating the problem in each area is a first step. Then brainstorm, alone or with a friend who is willing to help, about possible (maybe not all that likely, but possible) solutions. In my example, taking a different career path seems indicated, since many fewer legal secretaries are needed in light of modern technology. So I need to know what I would be able to do, perhaps get some more training, maybe even go back to school full time. Who would pay for it? In my case, there is no one but the taxpayers of the State of California, which is against my principals.
You will often find that the easiest things to think up are the objections to a given possibility. So take the time to look at each one and see how they could be overcome. In my example about political principals above, I must accept the humiliating idea that I live in an imperfect world, and the only significant source of help for me is the State of California. I have, after all, been paying a lot of taxes for many years.
Without continuing in my example about myself, let me say that my point is once you engage your mind, your knowledge and your reasoning, in the attempt to solve the problems you face, you are not going to feel nearly so unhappy. Yes, you will see objections. But many of them can be overcome in one way or another; again, using whatever help from others is available to you.
I hope you make the decision to take command of your life, and do not allow self-pity (which is really what much of this is about) to cripple your good judgment. Good luck and God bless!

Man, so am I! Can't work most the time because of multiple sclerosis. I just drink a lot of beer. Not a fix, but it gets my mind off of things.
