I have a son with autism, and we require help for modifications.?

Question:
Is there a Canadian organization besides Easter Seals, that helps fund disability modifications to a home in Ontario Canada? My son requires massive intervention in all areas, is on a 22 year wait list for a group home, and is highly active and destructive. He takes meds for obsessive/compulsive disorder, but this doesn't really slow him down. Last week he smahed a toilet, through a fridge into the basement, and tore a hole through a wall. The costs are astronomical, we've been told the province will care for him, but we have to sign away all parental rights in order to get him help.this is crazy, and we prefer to keep him in the home, where people with a vested interest in him can care for him.
It's easier to place him into care, than to get in-house treatment, and help. We need a full bathroom renovation due to flooding(he turned the water on and damaged the floors and walls, my insurer says he will cancel my insurance if I file a claim, and without insurance, no mortgages.

I know having a child with autism can be extremely hard. My nephew has it. I live in the U.S. but I did some searching for places in Canada that have services for people with autism. You can try the Autism Society Canada, Autism Treatment Services of Saskatchewan, Geneva Centre For Autism( they provide a training institute on a fee-for-service basis). You can check out this site and see if any of these places can be of help to you http://www.netrover.com/~southgve/canadian.htm
Also try Harmony, Inc. & Autism http://www.harmonyinc.org/about/autism.html
And try Resources on Autism for the Canadian Families http://autism.about.com/od/canadiansonly/
This link lists different treatment services located in Canada http://ca.dir.yahoo.com/Regional/Countries/Canada/Health/Diseases_and_Conditions/Autism/Organizations/
I hope you're able to find one that helps. It's great that you're not signing over your parental rights to get help for your son. He can't help being aitistic and he needs your love and support. Good luck to you and your family.

i am glad to hear u would rather not send him away my parents used to work for a group home in the U.S. and some of these people never even bothered to call thier children who had much less problems than your.

I work with MRDD (mentally retarted and developementally disabled) in the US. I have heard about that signing perental rights away to get help from somewhere. I really don't know too much about Canada or how to get help. It is really sad how hard it is for people every where to get help. I have had a lot of clients that came from a state funded institution. PLEASE THINK REALLY HARD ABOUT SIGNING AWAY YOUR RIGHTS. Most of the institutions or homes I know about have a lot of abuse. I have worked with a client that had to be sedated to clip finger and toe nails because they just ripped them off causing severe pain so he wouldn't let anyone touch his nails. His nails were all messed up. This has got to be the hardest desicion for you. I wish you all the luck and I will pray for you.

If EasterSeals cannot help you, they should be able to refer you to someone who can..Here in the US they are used primarily as a referral service.you may also want to check in the Yahoo Chat groups, there are 3 or 4 groups dedicated to Autism. My grand son, now 10, has Asperger's Syndrome, he is very high functioning, but will require looking after for the rest of his life.so I understand a little of what you go through.good luck in your search.

I am sorry to hear about all the problems that you are having with your child, it must be so difficult. If I were in your situation, a natural route would be the one that I would take..There are thousands of websites that discuss, diet and other natural treatments. Do not give your province control over your child, they dont care about him. Drugs will be what they give him and thats it.Do some research on the net and see what methods have been proven to treat your sons condition. I know from having 4 children that doctors dont always know what is best for our children. Sometimes we have to find treatments on our own.
God Bless you!
