I would becareful labeling a child, especially a young child, with the diagnosis of intermittent explosive d/o. The short view of the diagnosis is this: Intermittent explosive disorder is characterized by discrete episodes of failure to resist aggressive impulses resulting in sericous assaults or destruction of property. The degree of aggressiveness expressed during the episodes is grossly out of proportion to any precipitating psychosocial stressors. I would be leary of a diagnosis of intermittent explosive disorder until all other disorders that are associated with aggressive impulses or behavior are ruled out. A neurological exam would rule out any medical conditions (such as head injury, episodes of unconsciousness or febrile seizures in childhood). A LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) can assist with therapy and a good behavior modification program. A strong behavior modification program will benefit the child and give them some guidelines/rules in school and whilst at home-thus allowing the child the opportunity to gain control of themself. A good beh. mod. program will also allow the child some victories for doing the right thing. Good luck!

how old is the child? Usually means cant tolerate fustration and becomes agressive, hostile and even can cause harm to others. Set limits and stick to your guns. If they are harming themselves or others take them to see a specialist.if that dont help take them to a hospital that deals with children and mental illness. There they will get the help they need; you may want to consider medication but most importantly behavior modification
