My mother told me the same thing when I was younger , however, studies have shown that douching is not always a good idea. The vagina naturally cleanes itself. Douching afer your menstral or after sex is not always neccesary. You should only douch afer getting your dr's consent. Accessive douching can actually cause vaginal dryness and disturb the balance of good/bad bacteria in the vagina and can create more problems.
