See to it that he gets to a hospital and checked out or in. It could be that his own physiology is causing his depression or that he needs to talk to someone about his problems. As soon as possible.

It depends on the situation at large. One being his/her age - if you all are younger and his/her parents are involved in their life then it's very important to tell them even though you may be afraid you might loose that friend. It's hard, but I've had to do it so I know what it's like. Although if you are older and in college, be supportive and talk to them about it - if they have actual plans of harming them self or if they just are down a lot. If you feel there is an imminate danger to them, it is your job to call the police if they are not willing to go to the hospital on their own. If it is not this imminate than trying to encourage them to seek help from a counslor or psychirtrist is important.

You can't, your no better equipped to help her that you would be if she needed brain surgery. As a friend, get her to a professional.

You may make her day better, but if she is truly depressed she will slip back into the dark, thus when you make her day better you are really prolonging the help she needs.

Be supportive. Urge your friend to go to a therapist & offer to drive him/her & wait in the waiting room (or go in with your friend if you can). I've had depressionmost of my life & it's really difficult to deal with. As much as I wanted to be alone I always wished I had a friend there to help me. Let you friend talk to you, but if you feel like it's a burden on you or you don't know how to answer the questions, he/she should be seeing a therapist on a regular basis. Your friend may need medication for a while too, and a doctor can help with that decision. Just let your friend know you are there, and try not to let him/her know that you are burdened, if you are. If you really care about a friend sometimes a sacrifice here and there is worth it in the long run. Best of luck!

I know of no cure for depression, but from experience with depression in myself. i have a friend that arrives and gets me out for a while normally we go for ice cream and a walk which helps some.don't be concerned if your friend doesn't want to get cleaned up, go some place where there isn't alot of people, after a couple of days of some exercise. it helps me out.
