I have a 4 month old daughter who has an ASD/VSD, would like to hear after stories from other parents.?

My daughter is supposed to have surgery when she is between 10 and 15 months of age. I am very scared. If anyone knows any after stories, I would love to hear from them.

i heard that early HIV symptoms are like a mild flu. So how would you know you had it?

Answers:
Some holes are small and the ones between the atria (ASD) are not as serious as the ones between the ventricles (VSD). Some of these will self-correct in time. That is if the hole is small enough the child may grow up to have no defect at all.

My sister-in-law was diagnosed with an ASD in her 20s. She came from an under-developed country where this was not diagnosed. I am sure you will be relieved to know that she made it that long without an operation. When she came to USA and since she was planning to have children, it was suggested that she had an operation to correct the defect so it would not complicate the pregnancies. She is fine now. Has 2 beautiful children and the only reminders of the defect, is an old scar on her chest.

Having a child who needs surgery would make any mother nervous. Make sure to get a second opinion now and before you decide to proceed with the surgery. Someone told me a long time ago that surgeons like to CUT and sometimes they forget about other things. There is a lot of truth to that! I will pray for you.

My 2 month old son TJ also has an ASD/VSD. 8 mm atrial and 15 mm ventricular. They've just finally cleared him to come home for now, and are planning to do the surgery before his first birthday.

The doctors here assure me that the repair procedure for ASD/VSD in an otherwise healthy infant is, while definitely not trivial, now approaching the level of a routine procedure. The hospital here (Toho University Medical Center Oomori, Tokyo) has successfully repaired a severe VSD on an 1,200 gram premature infant.

The other assurance that we get from our baby's doctor is that the VSD and ASD repairs are permanent - once they're fixed, they're fixed.

Best of luck!
