Yes, EXTREME increases can result just from discussing stressful situations.

The nurse used to ask me a specific question (about something going on in my life)when I first arrived. She did this at every visit. Then, she would take my blood pressure. When the doctor came in, he would lecture me on how my blood pressure was very high every time I had an appointment. He didn't believe that I was getting lower numbers outside of his office.
When I realized this one area of my life caused bizarre amounts of stress in me, I told the nurse to take my blood pressure BEFORE asking any questions.
My blood pressure is now within normal limits.

Just don't take it when I'm thinking about this one subject.
