Un attended to tooth decay that has gone into the the nearve of the tooth,or a filling that "Leaks" because it isn't sealed completely and over time bacteria has reached the nerve of the tooth,Sometimes and most times causing a very bad toothache and a abcess at the nerve,(your jaw may become swollen) there fore a rootcanel is needed to removed the infected nerve,They will get you numbed up first, then drill a hole in the tooth and then find the opening of the canel,(that is where the beginning of the nerve is located)they will use a Tiny file instrument to place into the canel and use that to retrieve the infected nerve, after that is done they take photos to make sure the file (instrument) has taken all the nerve out and has reached the apex of the canel,(apex is the end of the canel)if that looks good, they will place medication soaked cotten balls into the canel, then place temporary cement to cover the opening,and they have to come back in 2 weeks or so to complete the root canel, or they may decided to complete it then, they sometimes wait 2 weeks so that it gives the tooth time to settle down, or to make sure there will not be any problems with it when they complete it, So when they complete it, they place this material in the canel, actually it this thing looks like a replacment nerve, they dip it in medication/filling material, and place it into the canel, again they take photos, then if it looks great, they are ready to seal the tooth, and leave the material in there, they do a filling on the tooth to cover the opening.You may experience sensitivity for a week or so, then it eventually completely stops hurting. Later, it should not hurt to bite down, or be sensitive to hot or cold,or throb.If so, go back to your dentist,or to a root canel specialist.
