Question:

Answers:
Prednisone, a corticosteroid, is similar to a natural hormone produced by your adrenal glands. It often is used to replace this chemical when your body does not make enough of it. It relieves inflammation (swelling, heat, redness, and pain) and is used to treat certain forms of arthritis; skin, blood, kidney, eye, thyroid, and intestinal disorders (e.g., colitis); severe allergies; and asthma. Prednisone also is used with other drugs to prevent rejection of transplanted organs and to treat certain types of cancer.

Prednisone is a steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. It works by blocking pathways that cause inflammation. Therefore, this medication is used to treat conditions that have inflammation as part of the underlying pathology. These disorders include allergic reactions, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune disorders like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, a variety of skin conditions, treatment of certain cancers..
So, a wide range of disorders. However, prednisone (and other steroids) have a number of side effects particularly when used long term. Therefore, steroids are usually prescribed for as short a time as possible, and are normally not the only part of a treatment regimen, esp. when used to treat chronic illnesses.
Hope this helps, but make sure you check with your doctor and understand why you are being prescribed this, or any other medication.

prednisone is a steroid drug used to boost the body's healing powers. It is prescribed for many different conditions including allergies, arthritis, inflammitory diseaseases, bacterial and viral infections and even migraine disorders. There can be quite severe side effects from both short and long term use including gastro-intestional disturbance, edema (water-retention or swelling), weight gain, flushing of the skin (especially of the face), nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, blood sugar flucuations (especially important for diabetics and hypoglycemics), and an extreme increase in appetite. Long term and repeated use can cause severe liver damage and has been previously suspected to be a hepatic (liver) damaging agent.

I just want to say to be careful with prednisone. You can end up needing to take it regularly, and it can cause diabetes, if taken in the long term. Make sure you discuss with your doctor why or how often you should be taking it if the doctor prescribes it for long term, or at your discretion.
