Kids throw tantrums at first, because they don't know what else to do to get what they want, or because they are upset. the biggest problems parents have though, is realizing, NEVER EVER EVER give in to ANY tantrum. Don't say no unless you mean no. Then, even if you should not have said no..STICK TO NO. The secret to stopping tantrums is not walking away, ignoring, and surely not TALKING and teaching them to beg/debate. If you give in to a tantrum, your child remembers that. Then let's say they want a toy at the store, they remember the time they screamed so loud you said "Okay, fine. Get it!" They will pull out that technique that worked before and use it!

You are posting in the wrong categoryi dont know your beliefs, or how you was raised, but from my experience, i have 4 daughters, 9,5,4,and 3weeks, and i dont want to sound mean or anything, i dont abuse my kids, but i do believe in disapline, and i spanked them the very moment that they tried to throw a tantrum, and it shocked them that i would spank them, and never had to do it again, they are well bahaved in public, but if you like to be humiliated in public or like being run over, keep doing what your doing

Kids throw tantrums to get attention. If you don't give them the attention for that tantrum, they will stop having tantrums.Make sure he isn't in a place where he can hurt himself, and if it's at home, just walk away. If it's in public, just calmly remove him from the place.
It also helps for you to avoid those situations where he is inclined to have a tantrum. That way he doesn't get into that habit. My kids never had tantrums. If I knew they would be cranky at certain times of the day, then we had more calming activities to help them work through that period.

i have 3 step daughters (23,21,and18) and 5 grand children and they all know that i just WON'T put up with it - so they don't and haven't ever tried. i think they know i would FREAK OUT on them.
As long as they are in no danger(to themselves or others),turn around and walk away. Ignore it. Place the child in a time-out spot. One minute for every year of age. When the child gets up or leaves the time out spot(before time is up), without saying a word, put the child back on the spot till time is up. Add a minute or 2 if tantrum keeps going. When they have calmed down, bring yourself to his/her level and speak inna gentle manner and explain why you chose not to reward that behavior. Ask for an apology if child is old enough to understand that word. If they do, and they are sincere, kisses and hugs.

If it 's to get an object: NEVER given in. set and expectation and make them do that before they get what ever they want.
Tantrums WILL increase (it's called an extinction burst) but eventually they will know that all that energy won't get them any results and they should die down.
