Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder wherein white patches appear on different parts of the body. This occurs when 'Melanocytes'- cells that make the 'melanocyte' pigment in the skin , in the mucous membrane inside mouth, nose, genital, rectal area & in the retina of eyes are destroyed. It occurs on both sides of the body in the same location. Both males & females at any age can be affected although 50% have it before 25 years of age.
Cause: No scientifically approved cause is known yet.
Treatment: No known cure for it. Some treatments are Laser B clear, XTrac Excime Laser which use laser that deliver UVB light; PUVA THERAPY- uses UVA light( risk of skin cancer); Depigmentation therapy, Self-Tan products, Airbrush tanning, Camouflage makeups etc.
Melanocyte transplantation done in Noble Vitiligo Clinic in Bangalore, India claimed 80% success rate. You can go through their website for details.
Topically Corticosteroid cream can be applied in the early symptom of the disease. It is simple & safest but takes a very long time & may not be the most effective.
