How can you get over depression without having to go to a doctor?
Answers:
It’s important that you make sure your body isn’t trying to tell you it needs help. Perhaps you do have a medical problem that only a doctor can treat. So don’t sign off the doctor thing so quickly.
However, in the meantime there are some things you can do. First, are there some things going on in your life that are causing you to feel fear and anxiety? Try to look inside and see if you can find what may be some sources of distress. Are you in a stress-filled or emotionally abusive relationship? Are there areas of your life where you feel you have no control, even though they affect you? If you do have these issues, then take action.
Here is advice I wrote in another question about stress:
First, identify what it is that is causing you stress. Are there things that are bothering you, or is it just a general feeling of anxiety? If it’s just a general feeling of anxiety, a change in your diet and exercise could help. You should also check in with your health professional in case it is a problem that needs medical attention.
If it is related to things that are bothering you, then you need to do some inner work. It is critical to get the “abstract” of your thoughts out. Do this by writing. Not just thinking about issues, but putting pen to paper. A very powerful function happens in the brain when you are required to transfer abstract thoughts to the concrete characteristics of paper.
Sit down and list all the issues that are bothering you. Decide if you can in fact do anything about the issue. For example, we don’t have a lot of power over the war in Iraq or the cost of gasoline (although we can take some simple actions to curb the stress these things cause in our daily lives).
Then, among those items that you actually have some control over, choose one that causes you the greatest amount of stress. These may be things like unfilled taxes, over spending, weight gain, cluttered house, a broken relationship, etc.
Then, make a decision to take one action to help reduce the stress concerning this issue. If you are stressed because you are surrounded by clutter, chose one room in which to start. Then in that room, choose one little area, such as a bookcase or a desk. Do something.
You will feel a sense of accomplishment with this little bit of success.
You also might sit and make a plan to get control of those areas of your life that feel out of control. Even the plan with alleviate the stress. Then, bit by bit, begin completing those things in your live that are not finished. Take control where you can. And do something so that you don’t feel so out of control.
Finally, surround yourself with life-giving things and experiences. Watch movies that you are funny and positive, read some good positive books, visit friends who bring you joy, volunteer or get involved in a charitable project. While concentrating on positive activities, make sure your are eating well, exercising more, and NOT drinking anything to excess.
Most important, pray and ask God to help you through this time and to comfort you and reveal himself to you.
God bless you and I wish you the best in all that you do.

You may not need a pill to preserve brain function or fight depression. Exercise has a major positive effect on our brains. A brisk 30-minute walk or jog three times a week may be just as effective in relieving major depression as are standard antidepressant drugs.

The best way I found to get over depression was to focus on the things and people in my life that made me happy. I came to find out that sometimes depression is based on who you seround yourself with..boyfriend..job..new mother..There are many things in life that can also make you happy. Sit back and take a hard look at your life and maybe make a list of all the things in your life and what you seem to think would make you depressed. This is hard to do but being depressed unless you have a chemical imbalance ( witch this is always what doctors say before putting you on what ever drug they need to market at the time)Is usualy something you yourself can change

Exercise, just go for a walk every day. It doesn't have to be long, just 30 minutes. Start reading books. Go to the bookstore or library and pick a shelf at random and read whatever book your hand lands on. Focus your energy outward instead of inward.is being a size 30 in waistline fat?
I have been depressed. I have been to a psychologist for help. Truly, in the end its yourself that helps YOU get better. You just need to put yourself in a more delightful mood. Little things here and there can have an effect on how you feel. Your home: is it mostly dark? is there something else there that brings you down? Change it because it can be really serious.Don't allow yourself to give into the feelings of sadness and smile! Alone but smile because allowing it to consume you is the hardest thing to get over once it has. Again, don't think a lot. If its a problem you have keep a positive aspect on that. Go out more(not necesarily "out" like to a club-I mean outside of your home-SOMEWHERE ELSE), don't stay alone for long either. And one more thing. I know that this wont be very clear to understand but hopefully you do. If you feel like at THAT moment you're getting down, DON'T!, even if you feel wrong not to feel the emotion of sadness, stop it before it gets worse. Good luck and God bless.
