What is the best way to strenghten the muscles supporting your ribs?

I have an old injury from rugby that tore a bunch of rib cartilage, that has been flaring up when I workout, especially running. I need to workout and get in shape for this fall's soccer season, but I need to strenghten my rib area before I can start running, period.

Twists, sidebends, side crunches. Anything to work the obliques.
