There can be lots of reasons or can only be one reason.
Usually it's genetic. In fact I dare say folks who aren't somewhat genetically predisposed to it never develop the full blown disease. However, it also takes time, and a lot of alcohol to become a maintenance alcholic that goes beyond simple "abuse."
they start to drink to much.
In my opinion TRUE alcoholics are born with that gene.
those prone to alcoholism are people who doesn't seem to be affected with amounts of alcohol that can normally produce drowsiness etc. They tend to drink more. In short, those who are more tolerant to alcohol, drink a lot more than others.
When you can admit that you are powerless over alcohol and your life has become unmanageable. It doesn't make any difference how much you drink, it's what it does to you after you drink.
When you drinl alcohol. If you mean when does one know when one is an alcoholic there are many different things: -
1. When it affects your work regularly.
2. If you need to drink everyday.
3. If it changes your personality drastically eg become violent.
If however you need to drink excessivly to make your wife/lover/girlfriend pretty this is normal.
If you need to drink to make your friends more interesting this is acceptable.
Our motto has always been that the guy that is too drunk to sing must drive home!

I have 15 years clean and sober. My mother has 25 years clean and sober.
My type of alcoholism was that I did stupid thing when I drank. Very stupid things. I didn't drink every day nor did I crave the drink but when I did drink, watch out!
My mother was what is called a "high functioning alcoholic". She worked every day, cleaned, raised us kids but she sipped booze the whole time. Getting clean for her required detox, for me it was just simply saying no.
We both drank for the same reason though. To avoid a deep unrelenting pain in our souls. For her it was my father dying, for me it was s e x u a l abuse by a family (so called) friend for a period of years. The fear of his killing us all put a real twist in my head that took years to untwist.
There are different types of alcoholism. Some functional, some not, some needing drinks every day, some not. The best way to figure it out is to sit in on 2 years worth of AA meetings!
