Lighter?? Hmmmm I dunno about that one..
Take good care of your skin. Sometimes I wash my face while I take a shower, with a scrub or light cleanser, or sometimes I just let the water wash over my face. Then after the shower I put on a 5% benzoyl peroxide acne cream. And then I put on moisturizer. My skin looks and feels so much better, and trust me my skin ain't pretty at all. Whatever you do, I strongly suggest using moisturizer every day. I use Mary Kay, their products are fantastic.
Eat a balanced diet, but cut out artificial and go as much whole organic food as you can. Drink a lot of water.
Get enough sleep. Always put sun protection on after the shower. Get enough vitamin C, A, D, and E - natural sources if you can. Smile a lot and say nice things to people. You'll glow.
Water, water and more water. Get plenty of rest and drink plenty of water. You would be amazed at the changes in the body when we eat right, get plenty of water and sleep. Water flushes the body of impurities that cause everything from illness to poor complextion. Also, water helps hydrate the body which keeps cells rejuvenated and helps skin keep that healthy glow.

Very good nutrition with loads of vegetables and fruits, No tanning, eight, 8 oz. glasses of water a day and moisturizer is a must if your skin is dry. Good hygiene (never rub around the eyes, because the skin can be damaged easily)and a daily ritual of face cleansing. Oh, by the way, I once cared for a lady in her 80s that had beautiful skin head to toe(much like a woman in her 30s). She attributed this to using Vaseline after bathing. It worked for her.
