What is the most effective way to lower cholesterol without taking statin drugs?

Question:

Answers:
All of the above answers are good, especially eating oatmeal once a day. However, be careful not to buy flavored instant oatmeal that is high in sugar. Try instead the oatmeal marketed with 50% less sugar. Even better, buy the good ole Quaker Whole oats, and add some cinnamon and/or Splenda to taste. Lowering intake of saturated fats also a big help.
There are also helpful medication on the market that work a little differently then a statin. One of which is called Zetia. Zetia works to selectively inhibit small intestine cholesterol absorption. However, as effective as they are, they still dont work as well as a statin drug. It has been demonstrated by numerous studies that statins reduce mortality. In fact, studies have now shown that statins reduce the incidence of a second heart attack if taken immediatly status-post inital myocardial infarction. They are now considered post-heart attack protocol drugs.
To summerize: unless you have strong adverse reactions to a statin It is strongly recommended to be started on 1 if you LDL cholesterol is extremely high, or if you have a history of heart disease. However, diet, exercise, whole grain oatmeal all have been shown to slowly decrease cholesterol levels
