my husband says it is because he is pure of spirit (smile) -- but he can and in a mega - second. He is not ill, very active (that could be the reason).
Joking aside, if this is something you are seeing in a person you know/loved one and that it isn't usual..there could be a problem - like SLEEP APNE, DEPRESSION and he should be seen by a doctor to rule out a medical reason.
In my husband's case,he has always been like that. Came from the days of being a pilot when he had to catch 'zzzzz' at anytime becuase he needed to be rested.
maby some of them are just wating to die or they are bord
HEY! Older people can fall asleep whenever they want!
But, tell him to tell his doctor, it could be medication.
Believe me, I know..
There is a sleep disorder with affects millions of people, women and men any age. They wake up many times a night, breathing and heart rythem is affected. they are prone to fall asleep during the day with out warning, very dangerous when driving. Two people I know have it and use oxigen at night. a very serious disorder, needs immedi. treatment..
Is he on medications that can make him sleepy? No? Then take him to see a doctor and ask that he be checked for "sleep apnea."
My best friends husband has it. My daughter and I were the first ones to see him in an episode of sleep apnea. He had come home and once he stopped the van, he fell asleep. Thank God, he was sitting still and the van was in park. Problem was, the van was still running, the windows were up, he had the heat on wide open (winter time), and the doors were locked. Not good.
Since we were leaving, we walked to the van to tell him we'd see him next visit. That's when we realized something was seriously wrong. He was ashen faced and sweating profusely. We knocked on the window and got no response. Louder knocking got the same. We started rocking the van, and still no reponse. I sent my daughter for their sons. And with two on each side, we rocked the van so hard that it lifted off the pavement an inch or two each side. Still no response. The eldest son got a hammer to break the glass on the other side and was ready to stike the window when their Dad "woke up."
He seemed "surprised" to see us and didn't seem to realise that he was home at first. That scared all of us. We called his wife and told her to come on home asap. She had run a package to the post office just mins. before her husband had got home.
He refused to go to the doctor for a few more weeks. But when his wife showed him a picture of him asleep beside the lawn tractor he'd fell off of; and a picture where he fell asleep while listening to a E-book, helped get him to go. When he fell asleep the upper half of his body was on the seat of the couch. From the waist down, he was off the couch, with his knees bent as if he had just scooted down on the couch; and let his body from the waist down, hang off the couch with only his bent knees to stop him.
When they ran tests on him they found out that he was asleep/not breathing around 55 mins out of each hour. The test is being hooked to monitors and you sleep with them on for 1 night. Then the doctor can tell you the results.
His now wears a mask to make sure he gets oxygen at night, but he appears to just be waking up all the time anymore.
He is not all that old either, but he is doing very well now. And will be around a lot longer to enjoy his family.

Was there and saw it happen as well as the pictures and the effect this condition had on him and his family as well as us as their friends.
