My son has quarter-size "bump" on top of foot, like rim of a crater, beneath the skin. Doctor clueless.?

Question:
This appeared maybe a week ago. The raised portion is hard. It looked a tiny bit red (like a rash) this morning, but previously has not had any color. Seemed to be a bit rough or scaly in the center at first, but that has disappeared, though he has a dime-sized spot of slightly scaly skin next to it. Doesn't hurt or itch. The "bump" seems exaggerated at night (after wearing shoes all day--he's 9 yrs old so in school etc.) compared to first thing in the morning. We did recently go to Florida and were swimming in the Gulf, it appeared a few days later (or less, maybe we missed it at first), maybe no connection here. School nurse had no idea, we went to our pediatrician who was completely clueless. He has us putting 1% hydrocortisone on it daily, but no improvement after two days. Any ideas?

Answers:
Has he had a CBC done or did the dr. just look at it? If the dr. didn't do any blood work go back and make the dr. do it and do not allow them to charge you since it should've been done to begin with. If it doesn't hurt or itch I'd keep a watch on it and him to see if any thing more develops from it. Have him take off his shoes and put his foot up as much as possible when he is home. You may want to take and ink pen in the morning and circle it so you can see the difference in the change throught the day and be able to measure the improvement. Good luck.

your description reminds me a little of ringworm.

Last year my son got strep throat, but his throat didnt hurt at all. The way I found out is because a large lump about 1/2 golf ball size appeared on his neck. The doc's told me that his glands were taking in the infection, thus the lump and no pain in throat. There are no glands in feet that I am aware of, but maybe there could be something in his foot taking in an infection that is somewhere else on the body. Like I said my son felt no pain, had no fever, and no sign of illness. But it was there. Are there any large pediatric hospitals in your area? Here in Utah we have Primary Childrens Hospital, and they are wonderful! Also you could actually try taking him to a dermatologist, and they could possibly run some tests on it. I wish you all the best, I know how scary it is!

if you touch the bump, is it slightly hotter there compared to the normal skin area?
If it is, you should take him to a doctor cause he MIGHT have a cellulitis. i could be wrong though. Either way, best to check it to doctor.
