Other Answers:
The answer to this question varies somewhat to the individual as some people recover from workouts quicker than others.
The average person just starting off who doesn't need to gain or lose an excessive amount of weight, the ideal amount of weight training in terms of time should be between 30-45 minnutes per workout not including cardio or stretching.
The ideal training split is three days per week having at least one full days rest between workouts also splitting the workouts so you train half your body alternatively every other workout.
Overtraing occurs when there is not suficent time for the body to recover between work outs or when the body is trained with too many sets and exercises the ideal I would say is between 5-8 sets per body part split between 2-3 exercises.
