what causes reduced pulse rate?

Question:
my at rest rate has gone from 58/60 down to 47/48 (I am 58 and not a super-athlete!) I am awaiting a 24 hour heart monitor session, but wonder how it's caused and whether there is any immediate danger.

Answers:
I'm assuming you had a resting EKG which looked okay?

Your sinus node is most likely "sick" as they say in medical speak (sick sinus syndrome). If you're asymptomatic, then they will probably do nothing about it. If you become symptomatic or your blood pressure starts to drop---they may recommend a pacemaker. Good Luck.

interesting problem. if it was me I would check my cholesterol and switch to preparing my own food. I suggest you avoid stress and sudden exertion.
light exercise seems advisable, and you must be sure to avoid constipation. No more fried food.
As a precaution, check that your will is to your satisfaction.

the normal pulse rate of people aged 18 and above is 60 - 100 beats/min. meaning, your PR of 47/48 is very low. do you have heart problems running in your family? Do you have a heart problem at present? Your PR is very low might be caused by a low cardiac output or in simplier term, your heart is pumping less than the normal amount of bllood our body needs, the bloood that travels through the different parts of your body will then be decreased causing now a decreased PR.

This condition can lead to conditions like cyanosis or bluish discoloration of the skin, low BP, increased cardiac rate and dizziness could also occur.

Hope you get better.

Our heart pumps the blood & as we get older, specially when we cross 45 or 50, our heart gradully gets weaker & cannot pump the bood as it does when we are young. This is one of the causes that induce pulse rate going down.
I think, you have nothing to worry about. But even, you keep monitoring your blood pressure & pulse rate periodically & keep in touch with a cardiologist.
