I happen to know a great number of persons with Autism. I have worked as direct care staff, management and as a host home provider for persons with developmental disabilities for the past 18 years. The agency I contract to right now has about a dozen clients who are autistic. I currently have a woman living with me and my family who is autistic. However, I have not known anyone with autism outside of my professional life. I have no friends or family members who suffer with this particular DD. I do know several persons who are MR personally, but none with autism.

I was a Special Ed. Teacher's Assistant and Assistant Physical Therapist. I've worked with about 8 children who were diagnosed with autism. Though I've worked with children with cerebral palsy, downs syndrome, and many other conditions, autism is to me the most difficult condition to understand. I was surprised at how I saw it increase in the special education population over the years, and how devastating the condition can be. Children wih autism become so socially withdrawn that it's difficult to communicate or feel emotionally close.

i know a boy with autism, and he is really really good at memorizing! he beat kids that were grades older than him and won the school spelling bee and geography bee!

I do not know anyone personally. The statistics show that one in 250 babies has autism.
