I believe the answer is much simpler than the others have stated. When you begin to lose weight by cuttin calories, it is at first effective. However, your body is having to use resources it isn't used to using, rather than having a ready source of energy (more food). You get HUNGRY because of this. Your body is used to a certain intake that it's now not getting, and so hunger increases. This is one of the biggest hurdles - reducing calorie intake while managing hunger. It is also out of the scope of my experise to answer here.

It's fear that being thin might not solve all your problems.
As long as you're overweight, it's easy to blame everything on what you look like. No boyfriend/girlfriend, no good job, bad grades, you name it, you can figure out how to blame your weight.
But what if you lose the weight and you're still alone with a crappy job and bad grades? Now who do you blame it on?
I'm not saying you CONSCIOUSLY think any of this. But the unconscious is a wily little monkey that goes its own way.

Some people use their weight as a "cushion" or protection against the world. I had a friend who liked being heavy because she didn't know how to deal with guys who came on to her. So her weight was a "barrier" between her and them. You have to figure out what your own issues are. What's the worst that will happen if you lose weight? What are you afraid of? How is your weight a protection now? Once you answer those questions, you will be able to control your eating a lot better. If that doesn't work, then you might need a counselor or someone else to talk with.
