Find a more comfortable way to sleep, and make sure that your back is completely straight while you sleep. It's better to sleep on more firm matresses. Old ones can also dip badly so that your back will be curved (not good). Also, just because it hurts at night, doesn't necessarily mean that's the cause.

You could be slouching at work, sitting to much. Do you run? Run on the grass and not the concrete. It's terrible on your back. Make sure your posture is always straight as can be until you've made a habit of and don't nedd to pay attention to it anymore.

Most likely cause is the way you're sleeping. But heavy lifting can cause your back to strain and only be felt at night. You would probably realize if this was the cause though, it would be obvious.anyway, if you find this to be the cause, do some stretching before you start lifting, and make sure you use proper lifting techniques (back straight, lift with legs, keep load close to your body)

If your only getting the pain at night.Try getting a new mattress and boxspring.

sleep with a pillow between your legs. Also try either a feather mattress topper to make your bed softer, or putting a piece of ply wood under your mattress to make it firmer. Also try stretching excercises before bed. Nothing to get your heart rate up though. Then it will be hard to sleep. If all else fails, take a couple shots of tequila before bed. Just kidding, I don't recommend that at all.

Sleep with a pillow between your legs or under your legs if you sleep on your back.

see your doctor, he can get a better history, do a physical exam, and possibly order more tests, including CT, MRI, triple phase bone scans, etc. good luck
