Why is yawning contagious?

I don't know, but I do know that it is only contagious if you look at the person's EYES, not their mouth. Try it. =)

I had an anthropology class and we studied a theory that the contagiousness of yawning has to do with the hunter gatherer pack mentality of early humans. When it was time for the pack to change gears (waking up, going to sleep, getting ready to hunt) if one member would yawn it triggered the other members to yawn as well. When you yawn it gets more oxygen in your system giving you a little edge. So it evolved in humans to follow suit in yawning. It was just a theory .
