why does only one side of my nose block at night?

Question:

Answers:
It depends on whether it is always the same side or if it alternates sides.

The responder above who heard that the nostrils take turns deciding who's going to suck the air in is absolutely correct. There is such a phenomenon as the nasal cycle, during which one side of the nose blocks itself off so it can clean itself up while the other side does all the work. It happens constantly (they switch sides once every 4-8 hours), but most people never notice it.

Now, if one side of your nose is always blocked, it COULD be sinusitis, but it's not likely. More likely, you have either a septum (the bone in the middle of your nose) that's deviated to that side, or one of your turbinates (bones on the side of your nose that help clean the air) that's a little enlarged. These can be treated medically or, failing that, surgically.

Good luck!

Go to the doctor, but when I had this kind of situation it was synosytus. This can be because of the mucus in your nose that when you sleep only on one side it goes only into one.

Because when you lay on your side all the boogies float over to that nostril. If you lay on the other side it will travel to that side. not to mention, I heard once that your nostrils take turns deciding who's going to suck the air in. I know that's a silly way of putting it but I really have heard that. If you're stopped up, try chewing a pepper. I never take cold meds and that works great for me, you know, those salad peppers they serve at the Olive Garden? Pepperoncini, I think they are called.

Do you happen to sleep on your side? I'm not exactly what causes the one-sided blockage, but for me, it seems to be a symptom of a mild sinus infection. When it happens, I'm usually trying to sleep on my side. Try sleeping on your back, propped up a bit on a couple pillows. That should help clear your sinuses a bit. Works for me!

You have two sinuses, one on each side of your nose. If you lift your face up with your face musckes, forced smile, you will open your sinuses and the blockage will clear. The mucus causing it will flow down the back of your neck cavity.
Usually the side you are laying on will block the most.

One of the reasons for the blockage may be deformation of that side of nost4ril of growth of bone of that side nostril. Due to which your nosril is getting blocked when mucose gets collected in the narrow passage of that nostril.
