Is there any help for bipolar disorder patients regarding money management?

Question:
Spending has been a problem for me before my diagnosis with bipolar disorder, and I'm trying to dig my way out. Any suggestions?

Answers:
It sounds like you are starting to help yourself. You know what your problem is so you can work against it. You must be pretty OK if you were funtioning undiagnosed. You should start functioning better with drugs and therapy.

Check in your area for bipolar disorder support group they may have some better ideas than I have. Speak to the people who diagnosed you they may have contacts who can assist.

Here are three options that I can think of. From your question, I think, you should be able to handle the first.

1.) The best way is for you to take control of your spending and dig yourself out with maybe the help of a friend or a financial advisor. Look at budgeting and stick to a budget that will get you out of debt. Speak to the people and companies you owe money to. They can stop any more withdrawals from your accounts and reduce your facilities after each payment so you can't revolve. Cut up your credit cards and delete all the information from your computer so you can't do on-line shopping.
Each payday pay your debts and fixed expenses (rent etc.) first, then budget until your next payday. Take up a cheap hobby like reading (get your books from the library), do volunteer work at a charity. This will require quite a change in your lifestyle until your debts are paid off but it will be worth it.

If you have enough left over in your budget, open a saving account that requires a week or a months notice to withdraw money from. That way you can't touch your cash if you are in a spending mood, but you can built up a reserve for a rainy day.

2.) If your hole is so deep that you can't make the debt payments (after negotiating with people that you owe money to) and survive, you might consider declaring yourself insolvent or bankrupt. Speak to a lawyer or an attorney about the process in your country. If you go this route you'll be restricted from borrowing and making contracts for several years and it can be more restricting than if you managed to pay off your debts yourself.

3.) If you can't control yourself or your money an option is to have a curator or trustee (depending on your country) appointed to manage you and your money matters. This is a huge step and this is one you should avoid. Speak to your psychiatrist or psychologist and they can advise you.

Trying to manage a budget is like being a recovering alcoholic - you have to take it one day at a time.

You could have a legal gaurdian appointed to your finances.. You can do that at your local court house or county offices. I would talk to a doctor about that before making any rash decisions. Also maybe try a new medication. My mom had that money problem she went through about 390,000 in less then a year. BUt she was put on Symbrax and Has done a 180 with her behaviors

I would say go to an social security attorney for help. It sounds like you need money from social security.
