I had this problem associated with a sore throat and nose bleed. Turned out the air in my room was to dry, so I put a humidifier on at night, drink plenty of water before I go to bed and keep a glass of water on my night stand. If it dosen't clear up in a week or two you may want to see a doctor.

Depends on how long you've had it and what your lifestyle is. Could be coughing from smoking if you smoke. Could be bronchitis or pnuemonia. Or it could be something crazy like Pertussis. Pertussis, otherwise known as Whooping Cough is not common anymore thanks to immunizations, however it is still around. It mainly affects or is found in children under 6. However, older children, teens and adults can have it but it will go unnoticed since the most common symptoms are usually the same as a cold with the emphasis being on an annoying cough that is worse at night. While it won't kill you like it might a small child, you can be contagious without knowing it and pass it on to someone who isn't yet immunized. The reason I know all this is because my daughters got a "cold" about 2yrs ago and it lasted for 6 months. It wasn't a cold it was Pertussis but no one checked for it because "no one gets that anymore". It is easily treated with a 10 day round of antibiotics but the longer you let it go the more damage you're potentially doing to your lungs.Go to the doctor. At the very least you'll be getting rid of an annoying cough. At the most you may be saving someone else's life.
P.S. Get a humidifier in the meantime or run a VERY hot shower and sit in the steam. It will help to relieve your cough.

Otherwise, get a doctor to check you. Try sucking on a pitch of salt oe lozenges to sooth your throat before you sleep.
