I am about 125 pounds overweight, how can I lose the weight?
Question:

I would recommend exploring the low carb lifestyle. Despite what the press says or anyone else that says its a fad, the fact is that it works.
The South Beach and the Atkins Diets are good ones. The two are variations of the same concept, eating the right foods. Foods consist of either carbohydrates, protien or fat. Eating the right mix of these is the key.
As we all know, these two diets advocate controlling the intake of carbs and eating the right fats. There are different types of carbs depending on the absorption rate into the blood stream. There is a tool called the glycemic index to help you determine the absorption rate. Typically, the lower the rate the better. See the source below.
I used the Atkins approach and lost 60 pounds. I still live the low carb lifestyle and have maintained my weight for over two years.
Ultimately, it is about calories taken in and burned. Regardless of which diet you choose, you should get on some sort of a light exercise plan. Changing your diet will help you lose weight. However, exercise and diet will jump start it.
I would recommend doing some research for yourself. You should have a full understanding of any diet plan. For any diet to be effective, it has to be a lifestyle change. I would also consult a doctor before starting for a general checkup and bloodwork. This way you can compare your results later down the road.

Hello, my mother is really overweight and I started her on the same plan that I had used a few years ago. I was wearing a size 26 womens and in 1 yr I went to a size 10. I weighed 230 and went down to 140. All I did was cut out ALL fried foods, no sweets unless it is a craving. If it is a craving only eat a small helping and that will take care of it. I also ate when I was hungry but it was in small portions. The only thing I did not give up was my Pepsi. As for exercise, I was lazy and it was hard to walk sometimes. But that is what I did, I walked everywhere I could. Around the block, down the street to the produce market, to my daughter's school 5 blks away, etc.. Walking is really the best exercise. Drink lots and lots of water, it helps break down the fat and it helps keep your muscles hydrated so that you don't get cramps from all the walking. Good luck. If you need a little support message me.

I have worked with people like yourself and its good that you want to change. Even though your body is de-conditioned there are still some very important things you can do to help to speed your metabolism. This is what will help you lose weight.
For any weight loss program its important to understand how to increase your RMR or metabolism. Your RMR or resting metabolic rate is the amount of energy you burn in your daily activities.
Do you know someone who can eat anything they want and they are skinny as a rail even if they dont workout? Well that person has a very high RMR.
There are several ways to increase metabolism but lets look at the factors that drive your metabolism RMR first.
1. Genetics - you have very little control, but you are not a prisoner of your genes.
2. Lean Muscle Mass - this one throws most people off because women think, oh no I dont want muscles and men think I guess I have to look like a body builder. Lean muscle mass is simply your weight minus the weight of your organs, bones, fluids and fat. You increase lean muscle mass primarily through eating properly, resistance exercise, and a lifestyle that doesnt promote catabolizing activites (smoking, heavy drinking and drug use)
3. Frequency of meals - the more meals the more the metabolic processes take place in your body and the faster your metabolism.
4. Water Intake - dehydration is a major drag on metabolism.
Most people are dehydrated and they dont know it.
5. Sleep - getting enough rest allows the body to function at a higher metabolic level.

Eat smaller, healthier meals and work out regularly
The basic premise of losing weight is burning more calories than you take in daily..AKA Work out regularly and reduce your calorie intake..Simple as that.Cutting out soda, fast food, and other junk will make a difference within a few weeks..Drink a lot of water and make sure you do cardio at least twice a week
It will take time but it WILL work
If you go to www.mypyramid.gov it has helpful tips and a you can set up a pyramid plan specific to your daily dietary needs. You can print it out and put it on your fridge. Then you make specific goals in terms of exercise and write it down in a schedule. For example you would write: "On Mondays and Wednesdays I go for walks at 5pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I do push-ups, squats, sit ups, and etc. for an hour at 5pm." Then you want to put that some place where you can see it. To see any results you have to perform some exercise for 30-60min 5- 7 days a week. You have to start slow and do something you like. Don't think of it as something temporary; think of it as maintenance, something as necessary as brushing you teeth.
