how many steps are in a mile?

I think there are those little step counter things that you can get that you wear and it counts your steps as you walk.

Etymologically speaking, there should be 2000. Our 'mile' comes from the Latin 'mille passum' meaning 1000 paces. One pace is the distance between successive falls of the same foot, so there are 2000 steps in 1000 paces.

Roman miles and feet were different from ours, but we've retained the Roman measurement of 1 pace = 5 feet.

That means that there are 5280/5 = 1056 paces (not too far off the original 1000!) and therefore 2106 steps in a statute mile.
