Because happiness does not come from what you have, it's from inside. People make this mistake all the time, thinking happiness can be bought by beauty, success, money, good reputation and popularity. but happiness is all about your mind, how you think, your expectations of yourself and life and basically its YOU that will make you happy, not the world around you.
Normally hard to believe that, we are so tempted to think people who have things that we wish to have MUST be happy. But what you said perfectly illustrates that it is not so.
