Secondhand smoke increases the risk of lung cancer in dogs.

Dogs that inhale cigarette smoke are three times more likely to develop lung or nasal cancer than their counterparts in smoke-free homes, says Dr. John Reif, DVM, who has spent many years studying the effects of environmental pollution on animals. "We already know second-hand smoke causes lung cancer in humans and it also appears that there is a cancer risk in animals," says Dr. Reif, who is on faculty at Colorado State University's School of Veterinary Medicine. Reif's research identifies risk with breed. Long-nosed dogs, such as Collies, are more likely to develop nasal cancer because smoke and carcinogens are filtered in the nose and exposed to more tissue. In short-nosed dogs, such as Pugs, Boxers or Boston Terriers, carcinogens head straight to the lungs. http://www.dogparlor.com/smokepets.html

My best friend is a vetranarian

is bloody nickles dangerous?

I don't think she was talking about the dog. I think she asked, what harm would it be to smoke around a dog.

If that was the question, than I think the smoke harms him. A dog smells things his entire life:toys, furniture, bushes, the ground he wants to mark as his territory etc.

I think the smoke would ruin his accuracy in smelling and would give him a disease, possibly involving his lungs.

I hope that was your question, otherwise I don't know what to tell if your dog actually smoked.
If that idea with a pet contest were possible, than try it.

Good luck solving this.
