Take it slow, and first shave with the grain of the hair to remove the longest portion. Then shave slowly and carefully against the grain to make it smooth.

For a really good close shave, take a cloth and soak it with the hottest water you can, wring it out and lay it over your face for 5min (or until it cools alot) before shaving. That really works for me when I want a shave that's smoother then a baby's butt.
