Will meds decrease size of an infected sebacious cyst?

I have an infected sebacious cyst. Last week was the size of a nickel, in couple days was size of quarter. Went to doctor on Tuesday, and he prescribed cephalexin for infection. Now two days later is 2 1/2" or more. Will the meds shrink the size? Or will it just take the infection away and leave size as is?

This is in response to you question posted about sebacious cysts. Cephalexin (keflex) is the drug of choice for most type of skin and skin structure infections, however there is now a lot of resistance to this antibiotic. I usually use Augmentin twice a day for ten days because Staphylococcus aureus (staph infection) is the most common organism to infect the skin and skin structures but it is now resistance to a lot of antibiotics. If your cyst is infected and it is enlarging especially after being put on antibiotics, means one of two things. Either you are on the wrong antibiotic or the cyst needs to be opened up and drained (a procedure called "I&D" short for incision and drainage). The doctor will inject some numbing medicine to the skin then use a scalpel to make a very small incision to all the infection to drain out. The it should be backed with iodoform gauze. You have to keep the gauze in there for a few days because you dont want the skin surface to heal before the inside or the pus can accumulate again. I would return to your doctor and either get your antibiotic switched or depending on how bad it is, get the I&D done. You dont want the infection enlarging and getting into your bloodstream.

EWWWW. Where is the cyst? can it be excised? Tx with antibiotics will eventually help the root cause if it is specific to the infectious agent

Cephalexin is a great medication for many types of infections, but it does take time. It should shrink the size, but I would not expect to see full results for a couple more days. Keep taking the meds until they run out, even if you think you are cured before that, or the infection may come back.

I've had those types of cysts, and the were usually pinched or squeezed to remove the "oil" No anti bi's were given but if it iss nfected it will help

Antibiotics will subside the infection only.
Complete treatment is to subside infection & excision
(surgical removal) of cyst.
