Tricomoniasis is a STD produced by the protozoa Trichomonas Vaginalis. This protozoa is usually found in the vaginal mucosa, as it is part of the normal flora of that region. It has the ability of invading the host tissue, thus causing local, superficial ulcers or lesions.
If infection develops, it produces a vaginitis, causing local malaise and itching, and even developing a cervicitis, that will anyways be usually asymptomatic.
By sexual transmission, the protozoa will invade the male's tissue, provoking a non-gonococic urethritis and prostatitis (with itching and exudation), which is a superficial, non-disseminating affection of the urethra.
Treatment is done with local antiparasitics, applied to both sexual partners.
Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted protozoan (germ) which infects women in the vagina and men in the urethra (inside the penis).
