Well you don't really find any ugly avatars, so I would say some people just pick one based on fantasy maybe or maybe they just can find one that looks like they do.

i did mine based on myself, and i actually think i look a fare amount like it in real life. not totally of course, but fairly close.

My avatar looks pretty much like me. Except I have dark brown hair instead of the black on the avatar and my face is shaped different. Maybe everyone picks one that is the closest to what they look like, since they all look the same. cute with perfect skin
i made mine as close as i could get it, however, i have since dyed my hair red so it doesn't really match any more.
