blood infections can be caused by a number of things most likely a urinary tract infection which are common among elderly women. it also could be from something as simple as a cut that got infected and got into the blood stream. the best way to prevent blood infections is to treat the cause for example keeping cuts clean and prompt treatment of any other type of infection

as with any ifection- bacteria is usually introduced into the bloodstream either by way of using dirty needles or if there is an open infection on the body and the infection has spread into the bloodstream.
