I studied General biology & graduated last year , & I was taking folic acid pills scince 1988 (I have a Blood disease) . Generally the folic acid is important to the formation of new DNA in the process of cell division . which means important to the building of new body cell . In children this is essential becuase the high rate of metabolism (Fast Growing) . Not 100% scientific answer but i hope i helped .
