Answers:
cervical rib develops from the transverse process of the 7th cervical vertebra.it maybe complete or incomplete or may just be represented as a fibrous band in the scalenus muscle.it may cause symptoms by compressing on the subclavian artery or brachial plexus.there can be no symtoms at all or some local symptoms like mass, pain and tenderness in the supraclavicular fossa os vascular symptoms like pain in the forearm and upperarm typically on prolonged usage of the hand and numbness.there can be neurological symptoms like sensory disturbances along the medial spect of forearm, hand, little finger and medial aspect of ring finger, weakness and wasting of muscles of hypothenar eminence.conservative treatment includes usage of sling, analgesics, physiotherapy of musles of shoulder girdle, refraining from carrying heavy loads with the affected hand. excision of the rib is the permanent treatment.if no rib is found during surgery a thorough search should be made in the scalenus muscle for the band.if the band is not found in the musle mere division of the muscle helps relieve symptoms.
