how do i practise yoga at home? is it safe without a trainer?

Yoga is fine if you keep to the simple exercises to begin with, and if you find you are enjoying it take up some classes at you local gym or community center.
It's not the best of things to lose weight to tho. try swimming, boxercise. anything that gets an aerobic buzz going ie. slightly puffed and warm. the best way to weight loss is a sustainable and healthy diet and regular exercise on a daily basis. at least half an hour of swimming or jogging (or even brisk walking) per day. but no more than 2 hours per session (can cause strain)
So if you walk any distance during your daily routine try doing so at a faster pace. putting a lil swing into your hips. this also hepls develop the beginings of a sixpack :)

It is best to take a few classes of yoga with a teacher. Make sure the teacher is reputable. Once you've learned the basics there are many DVDs out there that you can use everyday. Which ones you pick will depend on your age, fitness level, target area etc. Of course there are many yoga books out there too
I love my yoga practice at home as well as in classes. I would suggest taking a few classes first, so you can get an idea of the poses you enjoy. You can also get a yoga DVD that demonstrates the poses for you. Then, when you're comfortable, you can begin your yoga practice at home and see what you prefer.
