Efficacy of Gentamycin & Ciprofloxacin In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa?
Question:
Answers:
I have cystic fibrosis and I am usually prescribed Cipro for P. Aeruginosa, however, I usually don't find it to be effective enough. I think the pseudomonas must be too resistant to it. Many people prefer to be treated with an oral antibiotic like Cipro before resorting to intravenous medication. Zosyn, like a previous poster suggested, is an IV drug. I find it to be highly effective in reducing my infection, much more so than Cipro. I have never been prescribed Gentamycin, so I looked it up - I took the following from the website below: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is frequently resistant to many commonly used antibiotics. Although many strains are susceptible to gentamicin, tobramycin, colistin, and amikacin, resistant forms have developed. The combination of gentamicin and carbenicillin is frequently used to treat severe Pseudomonas infections. Several types of vaccines are being tested, but none is currently available for general use.

i have NO idea what you just said!
It depende on your local Anti-biogram. What is the suseptability of this organism to each drug. In general Gent will be the better drug to kill Pseudomonas. It is likely to be highly resistant to Cipro. Gent has alot more side-effects that you have to worry about.
Personaly, I like Cefepime or Zosyn.
