posterior or dorsal is the back of the hand,
anterior or palmar is the palm of the hand,
metacarpals describes the bones within the hand (or foot),
phalanges describes the bones of the fingers/toes (or digits.)

In veterinary terminology, it's the same except for the use of posterior/anterior, which are not often used in veterinary medicine, and in animals palmar (or plantar for hind legs) extends up to the back of the knee (or hock.)

I've always called the back of the hand the posterior side. The palm of the hand is the anterior side. The back could also be the distal side.

The "top" of the hand is called its dorsal surface (like the dorsal fin on a shark or dolphin). The palmar, i.e. bottom surface would be it's ventral side. Hope this helps.
